Plague Inc. Scenario: Frozen Virus Mega-Brutal (3 Biohazard) Guide & Walkthrough

blogger
The Frozen Virus scenario is one of the recently released scenarios included in the April 24, 2014 update. As the in-game description says, it is a virus that was frozen and preserved in permafrost for over 30,000 years and was recently thawed by scientists, one of which is patient zero. Because it was preserved for such a long time in permafrost, the virus has lost some of its abilities. The main objective in this scenario is to, as with all plagues, eradicate humanity.

In this scenario, you'll control a plague which has its own unique set of abilities, transmissions, and symptoms. As abilities go, you will notice that you get to evolve DNA Repairs. What this does is unlock, or recover, the DNA sequence of the recently thawed Virus. This scenario also has a fixed starting country which is Russia. You'll quickly realized, upon trying out this scenario, that achieving a 3 biohazard score will be no easy task. Read on to the rest of my guide and you shall get just that.

To get a 3 biohazard score in mega-difficulty, we will have to destroy humanity in less than 365 days. Any longer than that time frame and we won't be able to get those 3 golden biohazards. We will have to infect as fast as possible and evolve the right symptoms in order to finish quickly. Like the Neurax Worm's Transcendence symptom, the Frozen Virus has a specific symptom that removes the need to kill people, the Neanderthal Regression symptom. The only thing we'll have to worry about is infecting them fast and gaining a whole lot of DNA.

Before I continue on with the guide, there's some things that you should know about first.

  1. If at the start of the game you get a prompt or pop-up saying that ships have been sterilized, restart the game. DNA is very precious in this scenario and spending them on water transmissions will waste both time and DNA.
  2. We'll be heavily relying on symptom mutations. This is because getting the key symptom to finishing this scenario requires a whole lot of DNA. Add the fact that we are attempting this in mega-brutal difficulty with its Genetic Shifts, the cost of evolving the key symptom would be unimaginably costly.
  3. Evolve as soon as possible. By this I mean, memorize the cost of your next evolution and once you get the needed DNA evolve it right away. Do not hoard DNA points, it's really not recommended.
  4. Your success in the end is determined by mutations and Genetic Shifts. If you manage to get lucky and mutate the needed symptoms, good for you. If you're lucky enough to not get insane Genetic Shift increases, good. If it turns sour though like not having the mutations needed and getting insane increases on shifts, then just try again.
  5. As you're about to finish, there are times when the cure progression gets too high, maybe even at 98%. Don't worry about that if you think you're close enough to getting the final symptom. I once had a game where the Cure completion reached 100% then I managed to mutate the last symptom. I won the game and had a 3 biohazard score.
  6. If you fail, try again. This is the best strategy I have at the moment and it works, for me, most of the time.
That about covers the warnings, I think. Now onto the guide. First, the gene setup:
  • ATP Boost
  • Aquacyte
  • Patho-Stasis
  • Darwinist
  • Extremophile
1.) The Virus starts at Russia, after the introductions immediately evolve these symptom and ability:
  • DNA Repair 1
  • Edentulism

2.) Continue to evolve the following transmissions in this order as soon as you have the DNA:
  • Amoeba 2
  • Livestock, Bird, and Insect 1
  • Amoeba 3
  • Livestock, Bird, and Insect 2

3.) Now onto abilities, evolve them in this order:
  • DNA Repair 2, 3, 4, and 5
  • Full DNA Repair
  • Drug Resistance 1 and 2
  • Heat Resistance 1, 2, and 3

4.) Wait until your cure progression reaches 50%. Why do this? Because we want to save DNA and let the Virus mutate some symptoms, if you're lucky enough to mutate the ones listed here, you'll save a lot of DNA.
Evolve these symptom if they aren't mutated yet.
  • Carnivorous Denticulation
  • Bone Dysplasia
  • Cranial Elephantitis
  • Neanderthal Regression
These symptoms will costs a lot of DNA. A lot. So, if you're lucky enough to mutate 2 or 3 of them, congratulations.

After evolving Neanderthal Regression, once everyone is infected you'll be prompted by a pop-up saying that humanity has regressed to its neanderthal state and you'll be brought to the victory screen. If you've manage to finish within 365 days, 3 golden biohazards are awarded to you.

I hope this guide has helped you achieve a 3 biohazard score on the Frozen Virus scenario. Like I said before the guide, there are a lot of factors that affect your success rate but after a few tries you'll always get a win.

If you've got any questions, tips, and strategies you'd like to share, post them at the comments below. I'll include the good ones along with this guide. Knowing this guide is not that perfect yet, I'll entertain any questions you might have to the best of my abilities. Thanks for reading my guide and Happy Spicy Gaming!

    1. This happened to me too. The 365 days is just a guideline from guesswork and not a definitive limit.

Try it again, the guide cant account for all the random variables but it is still the best there is.

Got 3 biohazard after the third successful attempt.

    2. funny you should post this today. I also tried today and got it in 343 days or something like that, still did not get 3 stars and was well disappointed. I am just about to try again.

    3. I think getting a 3 biohazard score also needs the cure completion to be below a certain percentage. I'm sorry I wasn't able to include this info with the guide, I was only able to recently find this out myself. Near the end, try to lower the cure completion as much as possible

    4. I am Anon 6:08AM. After I posted here, I tried it again 3 times, the first two got 2 stars, then... third time lucky. 346 days and cure 53%.
I have always thought that good scores are also dependant on low cure completion, AllHailSpicy seems to confirm my theory.

Best of luck to all of you out there, I can now confirm that the strategy works, you just need a bit of luck. Massive thanks to Spicy for posting it here for us to find!

  2. This guide is so dependent on your sheer luck that it's next to ineffective.

    1. I'm sorry if this guide didn't work for you. There's just a lot of random factors that affect the success rate that making a guide that covers every aspect, and wins all the time, is very hard to do.

  4. Was so close to finishing before I realized that New Zealand hadn't been infected at all. Suddenly, the news shows me that grunting has been adopted as the official language there... wut.

Tried again and it all went according to plan!

  5. I tried this 8 times, and never got more than 2 biohazards.

  6. I tried and never won at all. there are at least 2 countries not infected

  7. Wow...I beat all my games with your techniques, it's amazing and so much more fun when you actually stand a chance! Awesome, keep it up!!! Where is the Neurax Worm mega-brutal? :)

  8. This guide is the only one so far that hasn't worked for me. I keep having an issue with the small islands. They don't seem to agree with the rest of the planet, and refuse infection. Madagascar and New Zealand are mostly the only two trouble makers so far. I have failed roughly six games so far.

  9. Thanks to this guide I finally win this game & got brute 3 biohazards!

  10. Madagascar and New Zealand are always closing their seaports...

  11. It works! (used Normal mode).....

  12. Great! It works! After 4-5 tries, I got 208 days and 47% cure. I was lucky to get the expensive symptoms randomly evolved. To get 3 Bio-hazard rating you need to keep the cure under 55%, too.

  13. Just as a heads up, this also works on normal mode really well.

  14. I hate New Zealand so much.

  15. everythings work fine....until Madagasgar and New Zealand shut down everything in front of me!! (sometimes Papua, Caribbean or Philippines but always come in pair) and it seem that every fcking boat ignore those islands like they didn't exist man....

  18. Completely useless. This guide is basically based on luck. I did not win any game of at least 20 tries.

  19. I just used this and beat it first try, 77% Cure Progress, because I panicked and spent DNA on stuff to reduce the cure, as it was at 98%. All in all, I won at 318 days. Thanks!

  20. I'll have to say you're wrong there, mine was at 77% complete and still I had three biohazard.
