There has been some talk of Plague Inc. and Plague Inc: Evolved adding the ebola virus for a new updates in scenarios. The following article will examine the upsides and the downsides of them adding it.
Symptoms of the Ebola Virus |
Positives of Adding It To Plague Inc.
Raising Awareness of The Disease
It could be argued that adding it to the game may spread awareness of how the disease spreads and who it effects. This has a chance to reduce panic and increase the general public awareness of how the disease can spread and the disease in general. This may help reduce a possible future pandemic of ebola.
Raising Money For Cure Efforts and Research
This is another possible add-on that Plague Inc. could do that would be similar to the team up Ndemic Creations (The Makers of Plague Inc.) did to raise awareness of pulmonary fibrosis. Again, this may also help to prevent a pandemic of the ebola virus.
Plague Inc. Raising Awareness of Pulmonary Awareness Day
Could Get Money For Developer
This one is simply self-explaining. Although it could be argued that this just turns the ebola outbreak into a cash-grabbing scheme by Ndemic Creations. This will be explained below.
Downsides of Adding It To Plague Inc.
May Be Seen As Shameless Cash-In
Remember Plague Inc? That Shameless Cash-In On Ebola? |
People may see it just as a way to the developer to make money off a international health crisis which would severely hurt Plague Inc. if it was ever viewed that way.
May Start Mass-Panic
Already there is moderate panic over the ebola crisis. Now people thinking that 80% will die becuase it happened on Plague Inc? If you want to see articles about people freaking out about the ebola crisis just click these links below and see why it may be a bad idea. It is to note that right now that it is mainly confined to alternate and non-mainstream news sources there is a chance that Plague Inc. could spread the panic into the mainstream. I remember a couple days ago when I was reading a mainstream news source that people were freaking out in the comments. Seeing a simulation where ebola kills everyone might not help.....
- 1.2 Billion People At Risk! Ebola Now In India! (Godlike Productions)
- Another Ebola Panic Post (Godlike Productions)
- Supposed Ebola Simulator (Godlike Productions) Guess what game it is?
- 6 Billion Dead= Ebola (Godlike Productions)
That is just one websites. The panic is spreading to more mainstream sites and Plague Inc. adding ebola may possibly do the opposite of educating people. As people are wondering about ebola and stumble on the possible suggested scenario and they don't know what the game is about there is a high chance that it could be confused with a real simulation and thus the panic could spread.
For example, if they did not clarify this was Plague Inc. and the video was uploaded what would be the reaction?
Overall, I am still unsure if Plague Inc. should add ebola or it would have the opposite effect that it is supposed to have? We should remember that unlike Plague Inc. the deaths are real and real lifes are in play. What is your thoughts? Share in the comments below!
Interested In The Spread of Ebola?
Well I always thought it'd be a good idea to add an Ebola scenario. It'd be a scenario, so you wouldn't have to pay for it any more than you already do, and it could use real headlines, since WHO is in the news so often, and it could have real plots like the Ebola patients in Spain and the USA. And Canada would lead the global cure effort like in real life. ^~^
ReplyDeleteI'm well up for the addition of ebola. It's perfect for this game.
ReplyDeleteIt can't be helped that people get the wrong idea about things.
Alternatively, facets of this situation could be incorporated. Such as retarted behaviour helping the spread of the disease.
Imagine a transmission vector "uneducated panic" 1&2 with the 3rd option "mob inanety" being described as "the uninfected make efforts to come into contact with transmission vectors."
What a pickle of an ethics challenge! Like they say, "Ebola is complex". Curious to see how you do it. https://djewi.bandcamp.com/album/ebola-is-hear
