Part of the Series on Five Nights at Freddy's
In the game Five Nights at Freddy's the phone guy's name is not ever stated so we will call him "phone guy" in the article. That being said this article contains spoilers so read at your own risk.
In the game phone guy is the apparent "former" security guard who worked the night shift. He continues to downplay the situation, even when it is clear that you are in serious danger with comments such as.
Blah blah blah, now that might sound bad, I know, but there's really nothing to worry about. Uh, the animatronic characters here do get a bit quirky at night, but do I blame them? No. If I were forced to sing those same stupid songs for twenty years and I never got a bath? I'd probably be a bit irritable at night too. So, remember, these characters hold a special place in the hearts of children and we need to show them a little respect, right? Okay....
Then he continues with....
Uh, now concerning your safety, the only real risk to you as a night watchman here, if any, is the fact that these characters, uh, if they happen to see you after hours probably won't recognize you as a person. They'll p-most likely see you as a metal endoskeleton without its costume on. Now since that's against the rules here at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, they'll probably try to...forcefully stuff you inside a Freddy Fazbear suit. Um, now, that wouldn't be so bad if the suits themselves weren't filled with crossbeams, wires, and animatronic devices, especially around the facial area. So, you could imagine how having your head forcefully pressed inside one of those could cause a bit of discomfort...and death. Uh, the only parts of you that would likely see the light of day again would be your eyeballs and teeth when they pop out the front of the mask, heh.
He is obviously downplaying the obvious danger which gives you these three options on what is really happening.
- He does not realize the obvious danger
- He does and is lying (your boss)
- He does and is lying (not boss)
- He is being forced
- You yourself are overreacting and possibly just very tired and seeing things.
I will now take down each theory and pick out the best theory which fits with most of the game.
Firstly is the theory that he does not realize the danger. The problem with this theory is he always is speaking in a nervous voice which is obvious in all the phone calls you get. That makes the fact that he is simply ignorant of the place unlikely. You have been there for only one night and have realizing things are wrong, he has been at least for 2 weeks or so. That being said, he can't simply not realize the danger.
Secondly, the theory is that he is lying and is your boss. There are multiple problems with this theory including the fact that you should of been able to recognize your bosses voice, even over the phone. It is implied that Freddy Fazbear's Pizza is a small one owner shop or so, that is small enough to be able to recognize your boss so this seems highly unlikely.
Thirdly, he is simply lying for the kicks and jollies. This seems actually pretty reasonable and I thought this until I thought about a few things. The main problem with this is his nervous tone of voice which seems to indicate him trying to look after your own good. He doesn't seem to want to get you killed with his hints and tips on how to survive.
Fourthly and a popular theory, is you are simply dreaming and are extremely tired and the whole game doesn't exist. The strength of this is the Golden Freddy animal which seems to be your mind playing tricks on you throughout the night. The downsides of this is that it simply has no other evidence and Golden Freddy could of actually existed. This brings me to the theory I think is really going on in this place.
Lastly and the one I believe in, is the fact that Phone Guy is being forced to say those things by the animatronics or the owner of the place. He is trying to help you without getting the owner/animatronics to notice he is helping you so he doesn't get killed. I have strong doubts that the owner is even the real controlling interest in the place and that it is the animatronics itself which are controlling the place as they have gained a sadistic tendency to torture people before killing them. Some people might ask how is it possible or that it is crazy, and I respond to the fact that the animatronics shouldn't of been able to even move around in the first place. So this is how my theory goes. Firstly, the phone guy is being forced by the animatronics on the threat of death of him and his family to make up a fake story on how he was the former night guard and lure you into their trap. Although it is possible that he is the phone guy is a good guy, although as any normal person would extremely scared and obviously doesn't want you to die and gives you hints to the best of his ability which leads to his demise. Apparently they heard him helping you on Night 3 and killed him on Night 4. He continued to downplay the danger to convince him to let him live but it was to no avail. He was dead.
There are many strengths to this theory. It is possible that the serial killer (in this case the animatronics with a supernatural twist) was trying to lure more people into their trap. I explained in this article which you can view by clicking the name of it over here called Why The Animatronics Aren't Glitching in Five Nights at Freddy's. It is possible that the children are taking their revenge on people as their lives were taken away in the "Missing Children Incident".
The Night 5 phone call was apparently from a otherworldly source and not from the phone guy. It is possible that it was the ghosts haunted the animatronics (explained in the animatronics not glitching article link given above) speaking.
Any whom, this is my theory on the Phone Guy. As with all theories and speculation we are sure to find out more in the sequel called Five Nights at Freddy's 2. I am very excited for it and will most likely make guides for it!
I hope this article help explain the phone guy for you. If you got any questions please leave it in the comments below. Happy Spicy Gaming!
